Garrett Vortex Coil Comparison Chart

Based on Coil Size and Shape

Garrett's Vortex series is an innovative line of metal detectors designed for all-terrain use, including underwater searching. The coils for this series are all of the Double-D (DD) configuration, which is known for its stability in mineralized soil and saltwater, making it ideal for the Vortex's amphibious design. A key feature of the Vortex coils is their unique waterproof connector, which means they are not interchangeable with other Garrett metal detector series, such as the ACE or AT.

Coil Name Size (in.) Configuration Key Features & Best Use
Vortex Ripper™ 5" x 8" Double-D (DD) Best for highly trash-infested areas and for pinpointing small targets. Its small, elliptical shape makes it highly maneuverable, especially in tight spaces.
Vortex Viper 6" x 11" Double-D (DD) A great all-purpose coil that combines maneuverability with good ground coverage and detection depth. Its narrow design helps with target separation in iron-rich environments.
Vortex Raider™ 8.5" x 11" Double-D (DD) The standard coil included with the Vortex series detectors. It offers an excellent balance of depth, ground coverage, and target separation, making it highly versatile for most treasure hunting scenarios.
Vortex Reaper 14" x 11" Double-D (DD) Provides the deepest detection and widest ground coverage. This coil is the best choice for searching large, open areas for deeply buried relics or caches. It's less effective on small targets in trashy areas.
